Last week, I had the chance to attend the launch of my friend Annick’s book, Diriger avec courage, manager avec le cœur (Leading with courage, managing with heart).

We had the opportunity to start our business ventures at the same time.

As they say, she doesn’t mess around. After numerous talks and a first book under her belt, we’re already waiting for the second one to be born!

Author Annick Trépanier, M.Sc., explores the notion of courage in all its forms with great finesse. I love the way she illustrates her points, through examples, figures of speech, and also through personal stories. I have to admit, I recognized myself in Annick Trépanier more than once! This book holds many pearls of wisdom worth remembering to improve our posture as managers, whatever the situation we face.

You absolutely have to read the book to understand the nuances between the four types of courage. It helps us learn when to persevere and when to let go… It also offers a self-assessment on courage, considering that courage is relative. The good news: courage can be developed!

Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a courageous manager without an organization that encourages them. To make that happen, we need to foster a culture of courage in our professional environments so that human yet courageous, managers can emerge.

I close this book recognizing the power of imperfection and the strength of having the courage to be oneself… Enjoy the read!

The courage to let go yes, that exists (!) and I want to thank the author Annick Trépanier for putting it into words in her brand-new book « Diriger avec courage, manager avec cœur » (Leading with courage, managing with heart). Here’s an excerpt that particularly resonated with me, directly tied to my reflection on resigning from my position as mayor.

The courage to let go « refers to emotions, to surrender, and to vulnerability. » And yes, it’s hard to let go when you’re a leader! When you’re devoted. We’re conditioned to persevere. Which brings us to the very important difference between persevering and persisting… « To persist is to dig in, to keep going, to be stubborn, to insist, to be obstinate, to hold on. » She adds that « the courage to let go is what allows us to stop when we can’t reach the goal despite the time or money invested. It’s seeing reality as it is, not as we wish it were. It should not be labeled as failure, but objectively as success. This courage can also bring a communication challenge, since it requires announcing, exposing our decision to others and owning it, even when it’s often unpopular. » Thank you, Annick.

I’ve just finished reading Annick Trépanier’s (M.Sc.) first book on #couragemanagérial. An excellent complement to the training on the same theme that I had the chance to take with her as part of a program at the Institut de leadership en gestion.

Thank you, Annick, for your generosity, I’m already eagerly waiting for Volume 2!
